Dear Parents and Guardians,

I know that child care costs are a top concern for families, and I am writing to provide an important update about what to expect for next year.

I am pleased to share that Ontario has successfully negotiated a one-year extension of the federal child care program which was to expire on March 31, 2026. This extension ensures continuity of the program for the coming year, providing much-needed stability for families and keeping fees at their current average of $19 per day, and a maximum of $22 per day, until at least December 31, 2026.

While this one-year extension does not address all the funding pressures the federal government's child care program faces here in Ontario, it gives us the opportunity to continue discussions with the federal government toward a long-term deal that ensures the program’s long-term sustainability.

As we continue to work with the federal government toward this goal, I would like to share a message from the Honourable Patty Hajdu, federal Minister of Jobs and Families: “Families in Ontario deserve child care that is affordable, reliable, and built to last. Parents should be able to go to work knowing their children are safe, supported and included. As we plan for the long term, the federal government will keep working with Ontario to protect affordable choices for families, strengthen child care across our communities and make sure parents can stay in the workforce with confidence.”

I appreciate Minister Hajdu’s commitment to continue working with us to find a long-term solution. As promised, I am keeping you informed so that you can plan accordingly, and I will continue to provide regular updates. I know that families want permanent affordability and stability, and I want to assure you that we will continue to negotiate for a fair, long-term deal that ensures child care remains accessible and affordable across the province.

Sincerely,

The Honourable Paul Calandra

Minister of Education
