A new paramedic services base is under construction in Hagar, approximately 50 kilometres east of Sudbury.
The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board broke ground on the project on April 29 to replace the existing facility which was built in 1985 and considered at the end of its life cycle.
Due to the high costs of maintaining the aging infrastructure, it was determined by the Manitoulin-Sudbury DSB Board of Directors that the best course of action would be to construct a new, more modern paramedic base in its place, according to a media release issued by the board.
“This new paramedic base will result in faster response times, stronger support for front-line staff, and more reliable emergency coverage,” board chair Kevin Burke said in the media release. “This is an investment for the future of our Sudbury East communities.”
The new paramedic base will be constructed adjacent to the current base located at 7206 Highway 17 East in Hagar. The existing base will remain active and accessible while the replacement base is constructed to ensure continuity of services.
“Construction of the new paramedic services station in Hagar will not impact on any 911 responses” Paramedic Services chief Robert Smith said. “Maintaining services and response times is our top priority, and the new station will provide for response access to both Highway 17 and Highway 535, reducing response times into the St. Charles area.”
The new design will also allow for the expansion of programming, including space for the Community Paramedicine program, and will help provide better access to in-home care for the residents of Sudbury East.
“We are proud to reach this important milestone with the upcoming Hagar Paramedic Service Station,” Markstay-Warren Mayor Steven Olsen said in the media release. “This project reflects our strong commitment to enhancing emergency services and ensuring residents across our communities receive timely, high-quality care. As our region continues to grow, investments like this are essential to maintaining reliable and efficient response services. We look forward to seeing this project take shape and to the lasting benefits it will bring to the health and safety of our residents.”
