Carrefour francophone to Open an Early Childhood Centre in Markstay-Warren

October 22, 2025 – Le Carrefour francophone de Sudbury is proud to announce that it will soon open an early childhood centre in Markstay-Warren. The centre will be located at École publique Camille-Perron in Markstay and will welcome its first group of children aged 0 to 4 in the winter of 2026.

This exciting educational development in East Sudbury is the result of a collaboration between Carrefour francophone, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord (CSGN), the Municipality of Markstay-Warren, and the Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board (MSDSB).

The new centre will offer 15 spots under the Family Age Group model, meaning children of mixed ages are placed together. Interested parents may obtain further information or register on the waiting list by calling 705-898-1058.

This is the 12th early childhood centre established by Carrefour francophone since 2005. The initiative addresses a clear need in this region, which currently has no early childhood services, and completes the range of French-language educational services. This new centre will stand alongside the Tremplin Centre at École St-Thomas in Warren, which serves children aged 4 to 12, and the Place des jeunes program run by CSGN for children aged 4 to 12 at École Camille-Perron in Markstay.

“As in all our early childhood centres, this new centre will offer a French-language environment enlivened by the arts and focused on outdoor play. Young children will benefit from our educational philosophy based on imagination and enjoyment. At Le Carrefour francophone, every day is an adventure that encourages families to flourish in French,” says Stéphane Gauthier, executive and cultural director of Carrefour francophone.

“The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board is pleased to support this important expansion of French-language childcare in Markstay. The new licensed spaces at École Camille-Perron will help meet a clear need for accessible, high-quality early learning opportunities for local families” said Donna Stewart, Chief Administrative Officer of the Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board. “We are proud to partner with Carrefour francophone to strengthen access to culturally rich and inclusive programs that benefit children, parents, and the entire community.”

“We are proud to see this new early childhood centre established at our Camille-Perron school. This ongoing and fruitful collaboration with Carrefour francophone allows us to provide a learning environment that values their language and culture. It will be a place of belonging for Francophone families who can benefit from a stimulating educational continuum in French,” said Carl Dussault, Director of Education for the Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord.

The educational program will adapt to the interests of the children and the community so that they can see themselves reflected in the activities. To this end, Carrefour francophone will invite the community to an engagement day as part of its planning process.

In this spirit of collaboration, Carrefour francophone is seeking the support of the Markstay-Warren community to recruit educators and to explore housing solutions for these new residents.

The name of the centre will be chosen through a public contest open to the people of Markstay-Warren, the school community, and Carrefour francophone, ensuring that the community is fully involved in this community-building project.
