The Northern Housing component of the AHP allocated to Service Managers consists of $20 million and was established to encourage the repair of modest and affordable ownership housing that is in danger of being lost from the housing stock in Northern Ontario, and to encourage modest and affordable rental housing development where appropriate.
The Housing Allowance/Rent Supplement Program (Program) is a component of the broader Affordable Housing Program (AHP), a partnership program cost-shared between the federal and provincial governments. The federal and provincial governments have each committed $301 million to the program. Including municipal contributions to the capital program, the total investment by all levels of government is at least $734 million.
On April 29, 2005, the federal and provincial governments signed a new Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Agreement (AHP). With this commitment, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will have invested at least $734 million through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. In total, the program will help 20,000 Ontario households by 2010.
